How this Yorkshire venue is bringing an old library back to life
Jamie Christian explains why unusual opening hours work for them
A new product bringing premium quality cask ale while cutting wastage and growing profit is reinvigorating the sector.
The 4.5-gallon cask pins from Greene King are giving venues looking to expand their bar menu greater flexibility and delivering fresher beer every time.
The new 36-pint pins make it easier for bars to try the cask experience without the risk of not selling out – particularly useful when there’s no sport on.
While the traditional 9-gallon kegs are still a big hit for festivals and when the football’s on, the new pins are making cask ale more accessible than ever for customers.
John Malone, Head of Brewery Engagement at Greene King, says: “Serving this unique product used to bring challenges, but the pins allow our beers to be served in perfect condition while minimising wastage and maximising profits.”
The pins are perfect for less busy times and give customers a guarantee that their pint will have the mouthfeel, smell and taste that they’d expect from a cask beer, every time.
Greene King is the first major brewer to experiment with pins, a bespoke solution they say will increase choice and ensure usage inside the optimum three days.
Permanent lines on pins include the brand’s own IPA, Abbot Ale, Deuchars IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Old Golden Hen while they also allow venues to try some of Greene King’s seasonal ales throughout the year.
Bars and restaurants can expand their range and keep their cask offering interesting to match seasonal menus with around 20 brews.
Try the great range of seasonal ales available throughout the year in pins: including collaboration brews, such as Bird of Prey, key date ales like Back of the Net and the very popular Rocking Rudolph.
“Cask ale is at the heart of a great pub, driving footfall and guest loyalty. We offer full cellar training and guidance to ensure pubs have the knowledge and support they need”
